What is this Women’s day?

International Women’s Day, observed globally on March 8th, holds significance as a celebration centered on women’s rights, gender equality, and the remarkable achievements of women across social, economic, cultural, and political spheres. Originating in the early 20th century, Women’s Day is acknowledged on diverse dates in various countries and, while it may not be universally recognized as a public holiday on March 8th, it remains a day of immense importance.

This occasion provides a platform for diverse events, panels, and campaigns aimed at amplifying efforts to enhance women’s social, economic, and political rights. It serves as a catalyst for supporting the ongoing struggle for gender equality and shedding light on women’s accomplishments. Additionally, International Women’s Day serves as a poignant opportunity to raise awareness about women’s rights and underscore the pivotal roles women play in society.

International Women’s Day 2024: “Inspire Inclusion”

The central theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is “Inspire Inclusion”. This overarching concept highlights the critical need to foster a society where women are not only acknowledged but also esteemed, respected, and equipped to engage actively in every facet of life. Simultaneously, investing in women serves as an accelerator for progress.

The world is grappling with various crises, from geopolitical conflicts to rising poverty levels and the escalating impacts of climate change. These challenges can only be addressed through solutions that empower women. By investing in women, we can spark change and expedite the transition towards a healthier, safer, and more equal world for all.

History of Women’s Day

This day, initially rooted in the solidarity and activism of women advocating for fundamental rights like voting rights and improved working conditions, saw its inaugural celebration on March 8, 1908. The milestone event was a strike led by women textile workers in New York, where hundreds rallied for enhanced working conditions.

In 1909, March 8 was designated as “National Women’s Day” in the United States, marking a significant step in recognizing the struggles and aspirations of women. The global significance of March 8 was further solidified when, in 1910, it was internationally accepted as a day for women’s rights following a proposal by Clara Zetkin, a prominent socialist and feminist from Germany, at the International Women’s Conference.

Evolving beyond its origins, this day dedicated to women now extends its focus beyond working conditions to encompass women’s rights in education, health, politics, and various other domains. Celebrated worldwide through diverse events, it serves as a platform to raise awareness about gender equality, promote women’s empowerment, and honor the achievements of women throughout history.
