Le cachemire est un tissu de laine particulièrement fin qui est très doux, chaud et léger.
La fibre naturelle du cachemire est obtenue une fois par an à partir du duvet d'une race de chèvres qui vit en Asie centrale, et en particulier dans les montagnes du Tibet, de la Chine, de la Mongolie, de l'Iran et de l'Afghanistan. Son nom vient du Cachemire, une région historique actuellement divisée entre l'Inde, le Pakistan et la Chine, d'où il a été exporté vers l'Europe au début du XIXe siècle.
Par rapport à la laine, bien que fine, le cachemire est beaucoup plus brillant, luisant, doux et isotherme.
La beauté et le prix du cachemire dépendent de plusieurs facteurs, tels que sa couleur, sa pureté, sa finesse et sa longueur : plus le cachemire est clair, fin et long, sans gaines (la partie supérieure du poil est plus hirsute et plus épaisse) ni poils noirs, plus son prix est élevé.
